Little Dancer

This boy wanted to show the traditional dance they taught him at school. I promised I would visit his performance and look at his dance.  "Will you put it on the internet", he asked.  "If you like that, I will do that", I replied. "Promised?".  "Sure". So here it is . . . A promise is a promise!

Coming home from hot Asia and then this! Yes, that's cold, it's freezing! I was shivering when taking this picture. The mailbox was empty, thanks to our helpful neighbours! Our ducks in the garden. Next day we went for a (shivering) walk . . .  But luckily we have this!

Visiting Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, or not . . . . .?

Being in Kuala Lumpur I couldn’t resist and visit the Twin Towers. Won’t bother you with hight, building time, because all of that you find easy on the internet. But you may believe me, it’s high ! But it seems not tall enough, so now they are building a taller building and it’s blue. But that one is not ready yet. view from the hotelroom You see the Twin Towers almost anywhere in the centrum, in real or reflected in another building. And the sun, it’s 35 degrees Celsius, makes them shine in daytime, lights take care of that at night. another view from the hotelroom After visiting such a building I always feel a little unsatisfied. Sure the views are impressive but that’s what you expected. But not going up leaves me with a kind of “ who knows what I have missed” feeling. And not to forget all the people that, when you're home,  keep asking "Have you seen the  Twin Towers and visited them?" And when saying no, they tell me  " You should have, it's gre

A black BMW in Sumba

Image
Sitting, somewhere in Sumba a young man came up to me and started talking.  After the usual "Where you from" he excused for his English and told me that he was a good German speaker.  So we spoke German.  In perfect German he asked me what car I drove. " A BMW" I told him. "A black one?' he asked.  He surprised me with his reaction and yes, my car is black. He told me he had a black BMW at his house and when he saw my surprised look he smiled. "BMW, Buffel Mit Wagen" (BMW = buffalo with cart). A few days later I met him again, he remembered me and invited me to his house he was still building. And yes, he had a BMW the Sumba way . . . .

Coming Home, not really . . . . .

Travelling through Sulawesi on our way to Torajaland we had a small lunch and a cup of coffee (Koppie koppie). An older guy came up to us and ask the usual question: " Where are you from?".  "Belando, Holland" was what we almost automatically answered. "Then you're coming home", he answered.   When he saw we didn't understand he start to talk about the Dutch and what they did long time ago. He also mentioned that we should visit a funeral. in december there are many funerals because many people from Sulawesi live outside the island. In fact the amount of people that live in Sulawesi is just as big as the Sulawesi people that live abroad. (It's common in Sulawesi to wait with the funeral till there is enough money to invite all the family members, also those who live far away. A funeral is very expensive, many animals will be killed because they believe they need the animals to help the death on their way to heaven. I'll be sure there is
